How is heating oil stored?

Heating oil is stored in an oil tank that is usually located somewhere on your property! Normally it’s located in your basement or garage. Sometimes, its even located outside above ground. Although there is the occasional underground tank, but they aren’t that common nowadays.

How is heating oil delivered?

The only way to get heating oil delivered to your home is by a truck. There is no underground network of pipes that deliver the oil directly to homes like with natural gas. Due to this, the truck must deliver oil to your home, connect to the fill pipe and fill your tank through there.

Oil is delivered through the fill pipe (right), while air escapes the tank through the vent pipe (left).

  1. Make sure that you are actually out of heating oil! Often times there can be an issue with your burner or thermostat. Check that everything is working as it should and your burner switch wasn’t accidentally switched off.
  2. Order oil! It’s important to order oil right away – and give us a call to make sure we know you’re out so we can prioritize your delivery.
  3. If we can’t get there right away, go to the gas station and grab 5 or 10 gallons of diesel to hold you over. Pour the diesel into the fill pipe on the outside of your house.
  4. Restart the burner by pressing the reset button. Don’t do this more than two times. If it doesn’t restart after two tries, call us and and we can arrange for a technician to come out and bleed your lines.
